Beaten ballots: political participation dynamics amidst police interventions

Abstract What is the effect of violence on political mobilization? Taking repression-mobilization nexus debate as a starting point, we study effects police interventions participation, focusing Spanish crackdown Catalonia's independence referendum 1 October 2017. We analyze actions turnout using detailed aggregate data, well survey conducted few days after referendum. The two empirical approaches show that had both deterrent and inverse spatial spillover effects. Although raids local negative impact turnout, they induced positive in surrounding areas. Our findings also indicate heterogeneity dynamics, with encouraging people to go vote nearby areas, but mobilizing residents neighboring areas participate, especially those individuals fewer incentives turn out vote.
